iServi News | 20 March 2024 | Term 1, Week 8
Recently our Year 11 Human Biology ATAR students did a heart dissection to observe the structure of the heart and a recreation of ‘blood’ using food.
From some of our students:
“In Human Biology we are learning about the circulatory system. In class we dissected a heart to get a better understanding of how it works. We traced the flow of blood before cutting open the heart to see the inner chambers, as well as the valves and chordae tendinae. It was a really great experience as we got to see all of the things we learnt about up close.”
“During the last few weeks of this term, our Yr 11 Human Biology ATAR classes have been learning all about the circulatory system. This gave us the opportunity to do many activities including a heart dissection and the recreation of blood using food.
The heart dissections gave us a chance to take our textbook knowledge and apply it to reality by being able to handle and investigate an actual sheep’s heart. This was an experience that we all collectively enjoyed and it allowed us to see the future opportunities this class had in store for us.
The blood recreation was a sugar-filled yet informative experience that allowed us to see the ratios of the different substances in blood. We used mints to represent white blood cells and smaller versions as platelets, raspberry lollies as the red blood cells, and glucose dyed yellow as the plasma.
Overall, we are very excited to see where this ATAR course takes us and we look forward to our future endeavours”
